A favorite with locals and tourists, and famed for its wide selection of shrimp plates, Big Wave serves delicious Hawaiian-style food with extra Aloha!
Food trucks and fruit stands are long established traditions in Hawai’i, and few places are more synonymous with the former than Hale’iwa on O’ahu’s famous North Shore, home to Big Wave Shrimp Truck since 2005.
Now owned by brothers Max and Jake Nowicki, Big Wave serves a diverse menu of ‘ono grinds’ inspired by both Hawaiian and international cuisine. There’s something here to suit everyone, from short ribs to fried chicken wings, spring rolls to crispy calamari, steak plates to fish and chips. However the place is best known for the shrimp that gives the truck its name. The four principal plates - Garlic Shrimp, Coconut Shrimp, Lemon & Pepper Shrimp and Spicy Shrimp - are equally delicious and each come with a side of fresh greens and a slice of paradise! (that’s locally grown pineapple to the uninitiated).
Open daily from 10:00 until 18:30, Big Wave offers plenty of outside seating, with ample shade for those seeking escape from the sun, and local music to add to the ambiance. The atmosphere here is - as you’d expect - relaxed and easy-going, and the truck’s status as one of the top 25 food trucks in the entire United States ensures a constant stream of customers keen to sample these mouthwatering island flavors.
For those still hungry after devouring a plate or two of delicious North Shore shrimp, Big Wave’s little brother - Kaimana Shave Ice - serves an all-natural, premium version of Hawai’i’s favorite dessert at a 10% discount for anyone with a food receipt from the truck. There’s a whole host of flavors to choose from but the most popular - Coconut, Mango and Pineapple on a base of homemade Macadamia Nut Ice Cream - hits the spot every time!
So, whether you’re looking for a casual lunch with the Ohana or the perfect place to recharge the batteries after a day on the ocean, Big Wave serves good food and good vibes in equal measure…
