Yanagi Sushi

762 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu HI 96813

Known for its fresh ingredients, friendly ambiance and hoards of famous patrons, Yanagi Sushi has been a Honolulu food institution for more than four decades.

Yanagi Sushi

Founded in 1978 by owner-chef Haruo Nakayama and taking its name from one of the tools of the trade (the sword-like Yanagiba is a knife used in the preparation of sushi), Yanagi - with its unique blend of expertly crafted Japanese cuisine and relaxed island charm - has established itself as one of Hawaii’s very best sushi restaurants. Known for his uncompromising approach to freshness and quality Nakayama has fashioned a brand that aligns perfectly with its idyllic location. Service is relaxed but attentive, ingredients are locally sourced from the bounteous Pacific island offer, and food is skilfully prepared by a team of expertly trained sushi chefs whose remarkable craft is a joy to witness.

Comprising traditional sushi, sashimi, fusion-style sushi and other delicious dishes from Nakayama’s Japanese cookbook, Yanagi’s extensive menu offers great diversity, superb quality and good value compared with other Honolulu sushi bars of a similar standard. Guests can choose to dine à la carte from both the sushi / sashimi and regular Japanese menu, or opt for one of the combination specials at lunch, dinner and from the late night menu. A decent by the glass wine list, wide selection of beers and of course sake, complements the excellent cuisine on offer.

As popular with locals as it is with visitors from far and wide, Yanagi’s walls are adorned with photographs of the many movie stars, sportspeople, politicians and regular Joes or Janes who have dined here, and the homely décor adds to the restaurant’s distinctive charm. Almost always busy - particularly at dinner time - reservations are recommended to avoid disappointment.

There are few places outside of Japan in which one can enjoy authentic sushi of a comparable standard to that served in Tokyo’s restaurants; this is definitely one of them. So if you happen to be in Honolulu and you’re looking for old school, high-quality sushi in an intimate, convivial setting, then look no further than Yanagi.
